As a recognized dojo of the Sekai Goju-Ryu Ryusyokai organization, the Michigan Ryusyokai Karate Club has direct communication with the So-Hombu Dojo in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, Japan, the Ryusyokai world headquarters. The club functions as the Shibu Dojo (branch headquarters school) for Michigan and is the top-ranking dojo within the United States. Numerous Ryusyokai teachers and students have home dojos in the U.S. as well.
Karate Do translates literally to “Empty Hand Way”. Metaphorically, this can mean to always strive for peace, never raising a weapon against someone. It can also mean to protect yourself without weapons. Rigorous training builds self-discipline with a goal of seeking corrections for improvement, sets high standards, and cultivates an inner calmness under stressful situations.
Karate provides people with a well-rounded repertoire of options for life protection; strikes and kicks, strategies for movement, and throws and grappling techniques. Strength, speed, coordination, conditioning and overall health improve through regular training. Practitioners learn to think critically about physiology and biomechanical advantage as well as diffusing conflict.
Studying Karate affords students and instructors the opportunity for camaraderie and collaboration. Helping others improve is often as satisfying as self-improvement. Numerous friendships and travel opportunities occur along the way for those who commit to long-term training. Making friends all over the world is likely the greatest gift people receive from extended training.
